The Sesame Workshop Makes a Rare Appearance in Dallas-Fort Worth!

June 24, 2019

Sesame Workshop, the organization behind the iconic show Sesame Street, celebrates their 50th anniversary with a visit to North Texas this year. The Workshop will be in Dallas on July 3rd through the 6th, offering a free family festival and stage show on the 6th at Main Street Garden.

The visit will include collaborations between the Workshop organizers and local celebrities, city and state officials, and community partners, highlighting the ways that the show Sesame Street has helped Dallas-Fort Worth area children, and those around the country, get smarter and stronger, while also learning to be kinder and more accepting of others. There will also be a production crew on hand to film a segment for the show’s upcoming 50th season, premiering on HBO in November. A number of beloved Sesame Street characters will also visit Dallas-Fort Worth landmarks and local organizations in and around the area.

Chances are virtually every child in the Fort Worth area is familiar with Sesame Street and its characters. The show debuted in 1969 to high ratings and positive reviews, airing on the public television station PBS until it moved to premium channel HBO in 2016. The producers and writers of the show used educational goals rather than entertainment value to shape its overall content, and it was the first time that a television show’s educational effects were studied formally. Adjustments were made to the show’s production and content over the years, based on those studies.

By 2006, there were various versions of Sesame Street produced and broadcast in twenty countries; by 2001, there were over 120 million viewers of the show’s international versions. By 2009, Sesame Street was broadcast in more than 140 countries, and a 1996 survey shows that some 95% of American preschoolers had watched the show before their third birthday.

The Dallas-Fort Worth area is the only stop in Texas for the Sesame Workshop, and one of just 10 cities on the company’s nationwide tour overall. The tour will start on June 1st in New York City and then continue every Saturday until its conclusion in Los Angeles on August 3rd.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings was quoted as saying about the upcoming visit and festival in a released statement, “We are excited to welcome Sesame Street to Dallas this summer. Over the past 50 years, Sesame Street has been teaching our young children, putting smiles on their faces, and helping our families grow stronger. Thank you to Sesame Workshop and all the partners involved in bringing this fun, engaging family festival to our city.”
